    Pieter Vermeersch

Pieter Vermeersch was born in Kortrijk, 1973, Belgium. The painterly canon has been a question, problem, leitmotif, challenge, field of reflection and contestation for the artist’s work for many years. He has been incessantly reformulating his questions to painting - its tradition, medium and history, often measuring it against photography, architecture matter and the notion of time. With representation and abstraction as parameters Vermeersch’ oeuvre triggers infinitesimal perceptual experiences between appearance and disappearance through perspectives where the two-and three dimensional, the immaterial and tangible and time and space are blurred. Recent development adds a sculptural material gradient fields of color pushing it to the extreme seductive qualities of their surfaces aiming for a visual philosophy where past, present and future become one.

Pieter Vermeersch’s work has been exhibited in major institutions worldwide. Notable solo exhibitions took place in M-Museum, Leuven, Belgium (2019), NC-arte, Bogotá (2019), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent (2015). His work has been featured in important group exhibitions including S.M.A.K., Ghent (2025), KMSKA Royal Museum for Fine Arts, Antwerp (2024), Gallerie degli Uffizi, Florence (2024), Fondazione Prada, Venice (2023), Fondation CAB, Brussels (2022), Rose Art Museum, Waltham, Massachusetts (2019), Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2018), Parasol Unit, London (2016), and the Prague Biennial (2005). In recognition of his artistic achievements, Vermeersch has received several awards, including the Young Belgian Painters Award in 2007. Vermeersch lives and works in Turin, Italy.
