Caliph's Eucalyptus Mustache in Love with Diane de Poitiers" from 2009 is
a variation of Rebecca Horn’s earlier multiple "La
Lune de la Perle" from 2000. In this work, Horn, once again, used a
reproduction of a portrait of Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566). The original
painting is ascribed to the Master or School of Fontainebleau from the late
Renaissance and is part of the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon.
"The Caliph's Eucalyptus Mustache in Love with Diane de Poitiers" is
comprised of a metal box measuring 46 x 33 x 10 cm. At some distance from the
box, right in front of the female figure’s forehead, hangs a glass lens, which
Horn also inserted as a motif in the picture alongside stains of green, white,
red, yellow, and purple color. A green crayon is attached to the left side of
the box, while on the right, a piece of copper in the shape of half a mustache,
coated in the green of the pencil moves in and out of the box.
