Galerie Thomas Schulte is delighted to announce that Alfredo Jaar has been awarded the Prix Pictet 2025, the world’s leading prize for photography and sustainability, for his evocative series The End.
Focusing on Utah’s Great Salt Lake—described by scientists as an “environmental nuclear bomb”—Jaar’s photographs are both a lament and a quiet act of witness. The lake has lost over 70% of its water since the 19th century, exposing toxic dust and threatening one of North America’s great bird migratory routes.
Jaar captures the lake’s extraordinary beauty and its tragic decline in images of “great beauty and sadness,” printed in a small, intimate format—a visual whisper for our dying planet.
The prize exhibition at the V&A features works not only by Alfredo Jaar, but also by the other eleven photographers shortlisted for Prix Pictet 2025: Takashi Arai, Marina Caneve, Tom Fecht, Balazs Gardi, Roberto Huarcaya, Belal Khaled, Hannah Modigh, Baudouin Mouanda, Camille Seaman, Laetitia Vançon, and Patrizia Zelano.
