On the floor of the baroque Carlone Hall, a yellow elephant appears to be sleeping—or, on closer inspection, are these the fallen arches of an architectural structure? The elephant's sleep is both the allegorical slumber of modern sculpture and its own dream of utopian realization as built architecture. Decorated with illusionistic faux architecture and ceiling paintings, this work adds a sculptural dimension to the room in the Upper Belvedere. Lena Henke has proven herself to be a strong, leading contemporary artist with her diverse sculptural work. Aldo Rossi's Sleeping Elephant came to the Belvedere in 2021 as a donation from a private collector.
