Mark Handforth

Mark Handforth, born 1969 in Hong Kong, has developed a sculptural practice rooted in the visual language and material vocabulary of urban life. Drawing on familiar objects such as streetlamps, traffic signs, wheels, neon tubes, and other utilitarian forms, Handforth alters their scale, structure, and context to create unexpected interventions in space. His sculptures buckle, twist, lean, and extend into their surroundings, transforming ordinary fixtures into forms that are at once playful and uncanny. Combining meticulous craftsmanship with a sense of humor and pathos, his work draws on the legacies of Minimalism, Surrealism, and Dada, while retaining the raw energy and post-punk character of the contemporary streetscape.

Mark Handforth studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, and the Städelschule, Frankfurt. His solo exhibitions include ICA Miami; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Hessel Museum of Art, New York; and Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Villa Croce, Genoa. His work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; MOCA Los Angeles; and Kunsthaus Zürich, among others. His work is held in collections including the Whitney Museum; MOCA Los Angeles; Fondation Louis Vuitton; Pinault Collection; Museo Jumex; Pérez Art Museum Miami; Dallas Museum of Art; and Rubell Museum. Handforth lives and works in New York.
